Hi Kathleen

Don't take anything without consulting rheumatology. I know that some people think that herbal remedies are safe but not always and like any drug natural or chemical they can have adverse reactions with other drugs. Ring your nurse in the morning and ask to speak to her/him asap.

Hi Kathleen,

I agree with Sheila, check with your GP or rheumy nurse.
I seem to remember seeing something that said valerian is ok for us to take but best to check first. Perhaps your pharmacist could help if you can't contact anyone else?
Good luck, I hope you can take it because I have heard it's very good for sleep.

Love Doreen xx

I scoured the internet & could not find anything that said you can't take valerian with mtx. I take valerian very occassionally when stressed and thus far have had no ill effects. However, I don't take it on a regular basis & have only been on mtx 3 months - so don't know if taking valerian regularly or long term might be a problem.

As others have said, Kathleen, I think I would check first. When I had difficulty sleeping due to night pain, and struggling to find a comfortable position for sleep, my GP prescribed amitriptyline, along with my painkillers, and it has been a big help.

There are a number of folk on here taking it, so may be worth a try.

Hi
I'd be really interested in what you find out - my GP doesn't have a lot of faith in alternative medicine but i really have problems sleeping and don't want to take sleeping pills if i can help it

I dont want to take sleeping pills either Julie . I do have some and once in a while i do take one if i have something important on the next day.
They leave me feeling hungover the next day its nearly as bad as not sleeping.
I will have to start listening to my self hypnosis sleep cd. Kathleen Mc.

I have asked my doctor about Valerian she said she had no idea if i could take it with MTX.The pharmacist said he thought it was ok.
I suppose the pharmacist will know more about some medication than the doctor.

Hi Kathleen i would ring your rheummy nurse. I rang mine about alternative/herbal medicines for the menopause and she said they have a list of herbal drugs that are suitable to be taken with ra drugs.
